Decorative wall panels are one of the easiest ways to transform the look of any room. From feature walls in living rooms to stylish bathrooms or hallways, they’re a modern alternative to wallpaper, tiles, or paint — and they’re surprisingly easy to install.
If you’re a UK homeowner looking for a clean, low-maintenance finish without the mess of plaster or tiling, this step-by-step guide will walk you through everything you need to know.
Tools & Materials You’ll Need
Before you get started, gather the following:
- PVC decorative wall panels (check quantities carefully)
- Panel adhesive or silicone sealant
- Measuring tape and spirit level
- Fine-tooth saw or utility knife
- Trims (starter, end, internal and external corners as needed)
- Cladding pins or screws (optional)
- Skeleton gun (silicon applicator)
- Safety gear: gloves, goggles
Step 1: Measure Your Wall Area
Start by measuring the height and width of your wall to determine how many panels you’ll need. Always add 10–15% extra for off-cuts or errors.
Top Tip: Most panels are 250mm to 1000mm wide, so divide your wall width accordingly to calculate how many you need.
Step 2: Cut Panels to Size
Using a fine-tooth saw or a sharp utility knife, cut the panels to fit the height of your wall. Always cut on the reverse side of the panel to protect the decorative finish.
For sockets or switches, measure and mark the area carefully, then cut a neat hole using a jigsaw or multi-tool.
Step 3: Prep the Wall Surface
Your wall should be dry, dust-free, and as smooth as possible. If the surface is uneven, consider battening the wall first with timber strips to create a flat surface.
Step 4: Apply Adhesive
Apply a generous amount of panel adhesive in vertical lines or dots along the back of the panel (avoid the very edge). Press the panel firmly onto the wall, starting from one corner.
Pro Tip: Use a spirit level to ensure the first panel is perfectly straight — every panel after that will follow its alignment.
Step 5: Slot & Secure Remaining Panels
If you’re using tongue-and-groove panels:
- Insert the next panel by sliding the tongue into the groove
- Press firmly and continue along the wall
- Use cladding pins or screws in hidden sections if extra security is needed
For flat panels:
- Butt edges together neatly and seal the joins with a silicone bead for water resistance.
Step 6: Add Finishing Trims
Use corner, starter, and end trims to give your installation a clean, professional finish. These trims also help seal the installation, particularly in wet areas like bathrooms and kitchens.
Step 7: Clean and Seal
Once all panels are in place, use a damp cloth to wipe away adhesive residue. In bathrooms, apply silicone sealant around the base and any joins for extra waterproofing.
